Beginner-Friendly Waves
Lessons run at Crystal Pier's gentle inside break — the same spot generations of San Diego surfers learned to stand up.

Surf Lessons · Pacific Beach, San Diego
Small-group and private lessons for every level, taught by lifelong locals who love the ocean as much as you're about to. Board and wetsuit included — just show up ready to get wet.
Since 2012
For over a decade, we've taught thousands of first-timers, nervous beginners, and stoked kids how to read the ocean and catch their own waves — right on the sand where we grew up surfing ourselves.

Driftwood Surf School was founded in 2012 by a small crew of Pacific Beach lifeguards who wanted to teach surfing the way it should be taught: patiently, safely, and with a genuine love for the ocean. What started as weekend lessons for friends and family has grown into San Diego's most-loved surf school, with four full-time instructors and over 6,000 lessons taught.
We keep our groups small on purpose — a maximum of four students per instructor — so everyone gets real, one-on-one coaching on timing, positioning, and pop-up technique instead of standing in line waiting for a turn. Every lesson includes a soft-top board and full wetsuit rental, so all you need to bring is sunscreen and a sense of adventure.

Small groups mean more wave time and real feedback, not just a shove and a shout from the beach.
Every instructor is a certified lifeguard with CPR and open-water rescue training, so parents and first-timers can relax.
Our coaching team is certified through the International Surfing Association and trained in modern, progression-based teaching.
Pricing
Every package includes board and wetsuit rental. Book online below and we'll confirm your time within one business day.

$89 / person
Our most popular lesson — a 2-hour group class built for people who've never stood on a board. We start on the sand with pop-up drills, then move into the whitewash for your first rides.

$109 / person
For surfers who can already catch whitewash and want to start riding unbroken waves. We work on angle, timing, turning, and reading the lineup like a local.

$159 / hour
One-on-one coaching with a head instructor, tailored to your goals — whether that's your very first wave or dialing in your bottom turn. Flexible scheduling, any tide.
Meet the Team
Every lesson is led by an ISA-certified coach — here's the one you'll most likely meet on the sand.

Kai grew up two blocks from Crystal Pier and caught his first wave at age five on a board his dad shaped in the garage. After ten years competing on the longboard circuit up and down the California coast, he traded contest jerseys for teaching first-timers — and says it's the better job by far.
He's an ISA Level 2 certified surf coach, a state-certified lifeguard, and holds current CPR and open-water rescue certification. Kai has personally taught over 3,000 lessons and still remembers most of his students' first wave.

Yes — you should be a comfortable swimmer, since lessons happen in the ocean. If you're not confident in open water, let us know and we'll suggest a pool-based intro session first.
